What Does Antibody Testing Tell Us?

When your body fights a bacterial or viral infection, like COVID-19, it produces antibodies. When you get sick, your body mounts what’s known as an immune response. IgM – These are produced early in the illness, often within one to two weeks after getting infected, then fade after a couple of weeks. IgG – These are produced around two to four weeks later, and last for a long time, sometimes for years afterwards. An antibody test detects the body’s immune response to the infection caused by the virus rather than detecting the virus itself.
